General Psychiatry Residency Program

Message from the Director
The Residency Training Program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center seeks to cultivate future leaders in Psychiatry. Our goals are to share and create knowledge, gain broad and diverse clinical experience, and progress individually and as a group. We desire to be the premiere provider of psychiatric services, education, and research in the region.
Our residency program promotes a balanced foundation of modern diagnostic formulation, rational psychopharmacology, and effective psychotherapy, integrated within the real-world diversity of spiritual, cultural, and social contexts. Our progressive faculty are committed to leading this effort with active mentoring, research, supervisory, and educational pursuits.
The program is fully accredited by the ACGME for a total of 16 resident positions, four per year. There are currently 38 full-time faculty members in the department representing the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work at OU Medical Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Oklahoma City area is also hard to beat on affordable housing, great climate, excellent schools, minimal traffic, and all the amenities of a metropolitan city of one million. I personally invite you to take a closer look at us. Should you join our group, rest assured that you will be a superbly trained psychiatrist upon completion of your residency.

Didactics
A very extensive 4-year system of didactics is in place.  A diversity of faculty participate in these seminars, which occur on Tuesday and Friday mornings, as well as some noon hours. Our PRITE scores evidence the depth and robustness of these didactics, particularly via the year to year improvements for each cohort. We do not offer a PRITE review course, but have operated a formal mock oral exam every month for several years.

2007 PRITE data compared with all US Psychiatry Programs:

PGY1   51%
PGY2   49%
PGY3   99% (top score for all pgy3 cohorts in country)
PGY4   79%

Clinical Sites
Our residency program is offered through the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Residents in psychiatry receive their educational experiences at several sites on campus.
